Week 3 – Topspin
First we started warming up so that we were nice and loose and ready to do the drills. For the warm up we just started rallying with each other using any type of shot just getting used to the ball. We done this for about 5 – 10 Minutes before moving onto the main activity and skill based exercise.
The first part of the Topspin Shot is to position yourself with you keep your knees bent and have your feet shoulder width apart, with one of your feet slightly behind the other. Make sure your body is slightly square on to your opponent. When the ball and bat make contact put your weight on to your front, make sure that you make contact with just other the middle of the ball and make sure your follow through goes over the top of the ball to generate the top spin.
After getting used to the shot we did a competition. We set a stipulation where you could only win a point by using a topspin shot against opponent. This allowed us to really focus on executing that top spin shot as we wanted to win the competition.
What is Topspin? –With topspin, the ball is rotating forward so that the top of the ball is moving in the same direction that the ball is travelling. The force exerted on the ball by its spin will be generally downwards (assuming the ball has been hit almost horizontally). This downward force works in the same direction as gravity, causing the ball to dip faster towards the table.
